A showing from Southgate’s guys was sufficient to repel a Kosovo 5-3 in a European Qualifier.
England responded emphatically, scoring five goals in the opening 45 minutes two defensive lapses allowed their opponents a way back into the match after falling behind after 35 seconds to Valon Berisha.
The England manager commended his team’s ability but conceded they need to eliminate the mistakes .
« It was bizarre, » he explained.
« The outstanding aspects and the bad features are apparent to everybody. We made individual mistakes and a poor start to the match but showed composure to recuperate from these errors. Our usage of this chunk in the first half has been fantastic. »
He added on Sky Sports News: »The match should truly be completed at half-time, obviously, but if teams begin to lose leads then there is a different feel about the scene as well as the opposition have nothing to lose so could go for it, and we only have ourselves to blame for that. They have been poor errors, poor person errors and conclusions although not structural issues for us.
« It put Kosovo back in the game and at 5-3 we had a protracted possession and really calmed the game down. A long passing movement was that caused the punishment, which had been our chance. Unfortunately, we didn’t take this moment, but we managed to observe out the game fairly well from that point. »
It was a functionality from the men of Southgate who were at times scintillating going forward in the period before the break when Sterling and Jadon Sancho induced havoc .
Kosovo coach Bernard Challandes hailed Sterling as »one of the finest on earth » following his operation while Sancho took his opportunity with open arms, netting his first foreign objectives.
Southgate had high praise for those both.
He said: »The forward play was exceptional occasionally…Sterling’s performances are of the highest level. He was unstoppable. His comprehension of where defenders have been and his ability to ride his vision, challenges and desire to get in on target. I couldn’t speak highly enough of him.
Southgate added on Sancho: »We know we have got such excellent attacking gift. We’re really pleased with Marcus [Rashford] in the weekend. Jadon is a kind of player. He revealed his equilibrium and his ability to conquer people from a standing start was shown by him. He works really difficult for the group without the ballwhich is valuable to how we perform with, and that he has been rewarded with his first goals for England that’s a unique moment for him »
