Sergey Kovalev has been »very anxious » to get recognition from the Saul Alvarez battle and will use skill, not exceptional power against’Canelo’, says trainer Buddy McGirt.
The WBO champion defends his belt against the Mexican star, who is bidding to be a four-weight world-title holder.
Kovalev and McGirt met to discuss the upcoming clash with’Canelo’, and the renowned trainer says that the Russian is keen to pull off a career-defining triumph.
« I think that boxing wants a fight in this way, » McGirt told Sky Sports. « Kovalev wants a challenge, Canelo, he’s beat everybody. I respect for what he is doing, Canelo , jumping up to 175. I respect it reveals a champion, and I just feel that it’s going to be a wonderful night of boxing.
« He [Kovalev] is very anxious. After he dropped to Ward and [Eleider] Alvarez there was a lot of negative things being said about him, so I believe he is out to prove the critics wrong. »
Asked if Kovalev would like to be acknowledged among the planet’s elite, McGirt replied: »Yes, I think so. He has fought and I think he accomplishes it.
« He kept the light-heavyweight branch exciting when it wasn’t exciting. »
‘Canelo’ is pushing his own borders as he enters the weight course of his livelihood, however, McGirt says Kovalev won’t be reliant upon the dimensions and energy that overwhelmed Anthony Yarde in the stoppage triumph of last month.
« I am not looking at us becoming the bigger, stronger guy. My aim is to be the better guy that night, » explained McGirt. « His [Kovalev’s] boxing IQ is extremely underrated.
« Canelo is really a hell of a fighter, he is very smart, his boxing IQ is high also. I don’t think, so much as physical-wise, » I don’t think that it’s that a lot of danger for him.
« I’m not looking at power. That night, like I mentioned and I’m looking at skill, I’m considering being the guy.
